Health class is a mandatory requirement for most students. It's simple to
make the topics of fitness, nutrition and well being relevant to students with
disabilities.
Daily Diet Record
Teach students the value of a balanced diet by having them record their
daily diet for three weeks. Ask students to sort each element of their diet into
the basic food groups. Create a diet checklist to enable non-writers to take
inventory using a stamp or marker. Consult with parents or caregivers to obtain
a list of foods that a student typically eats throughout the week. Arrange the
list on the chart into the groups of the Food Guide Pyramid to help students
learn the food groups.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise
Include students who use wheelchairs in daily fitness activities. Students
need opportunities to practice mobility skills. Arrange fitness walks to
accommodate all students. Consult a physical or occupational therapist for
appropriate exercises or accessible walking routes.
Current Events
Have non-readers choose an easy to read article from an age-appropriate magazine
or website. Take five minutes to type or copy the text into a talking word
processor. Let the students watch and listen to the word-processor as it reads
the story aloud. Students can listen to the article multiple times if necessary.
Enable non-writers to summarize the article with a custom IntelliKeys overlay.

Photo Food Groups
Grocery stores arrange merchandise into sections that mirror the basic food groups. During a trip to the supermarket, loan students a Polaroid or
switch-adapted camera. Ask the students to take pictures of food representing the recommended servings from each tier on
the Food Guide Pyramid. For example, ask students to take six photos in the produce
department, two photos in the dairy section and only one photo in the candy aisle. Have the students to arrange the photos on a poster to create their
rendition of the Food Guide Pyramid.
Single Switch Assignments
Always expect single switch users to be active in class. Single switch
users can practice switch skills or answer questions in class using error free
Discover:Switch set-ups. Use IntelliTalk II to create switch-accessible
documents that let students demonstrate knowledge of health and disease.

Communication Boards
Use the files in this section to create low-tech choice boards, or
with alternative augmentative communication (AAC) devices. To open,
view or print these communication boards you must have the Windows version
of Boardmaker™ software installed on your computer. For more
information on Boardmaker™ software, contact Mayer-Johnson
at 1-800-588-4548.
